Bushranger Students Commemorate NAIDOC Week
To mark the beginning of NAIDOC Week 2025, a few of our dedicated Bushranger students participated in a commemorative ceremony at the North Metropolitan Education Office. The event was led by Cheryl Townsend, Director of Education for the North Metropolitan Education Region, and served as a meaningful way to honour the week’s theme of celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As part of the ceremony, students planted a native Tuart tree — a species deeply rooted in Western Australia’s natural heritage and a powerful symbol of resilience and connection to Country. This act of planting was not only environmental but deeply cultural, representing a commitment to reconciliation and respect.
The morning began with a heartfelt Welcome to Country, grounding the ceremony in tradition and cultural significance. It was a moment of reflection and unity, reminding all present of the importance of acknowledging and respecting the traditional custodians of the land.
Now standing proudly on the site, the Tuart tree serves as a living tribute to the enduring spirit, culture, and custodianship of First Nations peoples. It will grow as a reminder of the values NAIDOC Week represents — respect, recognition, and reconciliation.
Last week, our Year 9 and 10 students adventured onto a camp full of fun. There were evenings around the campfire, sharing stories under the stars and enjoying the simple joy of being in nature.
Daytime brought a burst of energy with arcade games that sparked friendly competition and rock-climbing challenges that pushed students to new heights.
More than just activities, the camp was about building friendships, creating memories and stepping outside of comfort zones together. Until next time, camp legends! 🔥🎮🧗♂️⛺✨

Each year Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June, it is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
On Friday, June 2 we held a Reconciliation Curriculum Day. Rooms 4, 5 and 8, along with staff, attended the Walk for Reconciliation at Kaarta Koomba (Kings Park), whilst the rest of the school participated in cultural activities such as damper making. It was a wonderful time for all students to learn more about Aboriginal culture, history and achievements and discuss ways in which we could contribute to achieving reconciliation.
On May 25th , we were proud to take part in the National Reconciliation Week Virtual Breakfast hosted by Reconciliation WA. The event, hosted by Dianella Secondary College, showcased the culinary talents of the Dookerniny Garbala Cooking Class from the Secondary College who used native ingredients such as lemon myrtle, wattle seed and finger limes to create a fantastic menu. A performance from students at the Secondary College was a wonderful opening before guests turned to the screens to watch the virtual presentations from Reconciliation WA.
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) provides an opportunity for Australians to discover and appreciate our shared histories, cultures, and accomplishments. It encourages individuals to contemplate their role in fostering reconciliation in Australia. NRW takes place from 27 May to 3 June, marking two crucial milestones in the reconciliation process: the significant 1967 referendum and the influential High Court Mabo decision. As we progress, reconciliation should become ingrained in the thoughts, sentiments, and deeds of all Australians, building a nation fortified by respectful connections between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
